What is the County Board?
The Champaign County Board is the governing body of our county government. The board members serve as policymakers for the county and administer various programs at the county level.
What do they do?
They have authority over four general areas:
- Budget Appropriations
- Justice system
- Roads and public lands
- Public health and welfare
They review budget requests, appropriate funds, hear zoning cases, enact ordinances and policies, hear reports from county officers. The board is also responsible for overseeing economic development in the county. The board also makes appointments to other boards, such as the Mass Transit Board, Forest Preserve Board, Mental Health Board, and Sanitary District Board.
The board consists of 27 members, three representatives for each of the nine county districts. Board members serve staggered two- to four-year terms.
